Surveillance at W2: Starkey, Superisk & Taal Mala

Really stoked on the show tonight at W2 – we’ve got American grime ambassador Starkey in town from Philadelphia, alongside last minute addition to the bill Superisk, representing Peverelist‘s Punch Drunk records – still in town from Bristol after a triumphantly infectious set at the New Forms festival last weekend.

Starkey has certainly earned his stripes in the international scene, having released two full length LP’s (2008’s Ephemeral Exhibits and 2010’s Ear Drums & Black Holes) on µ-Ziq‘s highly distinguished Planet Mu record label, plus releases on a handful of other influential labels including Keysound Recordings, Lo Dubs, No Hats No Hoods, and Rwina Records.  Starkey also runs Seclusiasis Records & Slit Jockey Records, with collaborators Dev79 and El Carnicero.  Starkey was first brought to my attention when Vex’d chose him to represent them on Mary Anne Hobbes’ Generation Bass special back in 2008, check out the video if you haven’t seen it.

Head on over to his slick new website to learn more, I’ll just leave you with a few more tunes from his soundcloud – including a new track that will be on his forthcoming Ninja Tune EP (!!)

Also, a collaboration with Epcot, “Surreal Estate,” which is coming on Frite Nite this fall.

He even produced a track for Eligh of the Living Legends‘ latest LP, Grey Crow.

There’s also his remix of Amon Tobin‘s “Wooden Toy,” which is also forthcoming on Ninja Tune.

And, last one, is the track he produced for Merky Ace & Kozzie, “PC,” which came on No Hats No Hoods.

Superisk may not have as many releases or as much notoriety as Starkey, but as anyone who caught him last weekend at the New Forms festival at the Waldorf can attest, he’ll be bringing some serious heat to the speakerboxes.  I bought a copy of his release “Find Your Way” from last year when it came out, and it became a bit of an instant classic.. Check out his soundcloud as well for more word from this beatsmith.

Local support is provided by Taal Mala of Lighta! Sound, who has been making some real badman tunes as of late, including a collaboration with UK garage & bass music legend El-B, check it out below.

He’s also got a tune “Elegent Replica” forthcoming from Aufect Recordings, backed with a remix from another Vancouver favorite, HxdB.

Kaglar Omega, an ally of my Toronto Dubslingers crew, will start the night off with his unique style of dark bass music.  The event is $15 at the door, this event goes down at W2 Media Cafe, at 111 W Hastings in Vancouver – check the facebook event page here.
