In this first month of 2012, I’ve decided to launch my podcast series for the Daily Dread – I hope to make it a regular affair, (at least bimonthly) offering up mixes from guest selectors as well as being an outlet for me to consistently release shorter 30-45 minute long mixes in a wide array of different styles.  This first one is a throwback to the vibes found on my Shambhala 2010 promo mix, Real Love, head-nodding raggamuffin hip-hop & dancehall vibes from start to finish – check the full tracklisting at the bottom of the page.

Big respect out to MC Zulu for the vocal drop on the intro, who passed through Vancouver just this past weekend with a blazing performance, and it sounds like we might be seeing him again soon this Spring!  After dropping a tune from him we move into some ragga hip-hop styles care of the Dirty Dubsters camp & Big Toe’s Hi Fi, before exploring the Jamaica-Australian connection – two of Kingston’s finest upcoming female vocalists (Vida Sunshyne & Mona Lisa) riding a riddim from Melbourne’s Mista Savona, taken from the Melbourne Meets Kingston compilation.  Next up are some modern dancehall classics, the Style & Swagga riddim, preceded by the Cosa Nostra riddim.

After a mix up of new tunes, (new Beenie Man single, Lotek) classics, (Tanya Stephens) and mashups (Blak Twang refix’d by The Heatwave) – I eventually attempt to address the ever-growing economic crisis – with tunes like General Degree‘s “Cyaan Tek No More,” “World Crisis” from Million Stylez & Don Carlos, and Blak Twang’s “Red Letters” – a tune that was well ahead of its time, with lyrical content that is almost frighteningly relevant in this day and age, though it was released on 1998’s 19 Long Time LPThings lighten up for the end of the mix, including two cuts from a current favorite – the Dancehall Style riddim from Curtis Lynch’s Necessary Mayhem productions.  As the last track was playing out, I was reminded of the similar “answering machine” concept on the intro of my favorite track by California’s People Under The Stairs, and decided to close the mix with that.
