UK-based reggae & dancehall vocalist Gappy Ranks makes his second Vancouver appearance this Friday, November 16th at The Waldorf Hotel, alongside Seattle-based singer Bobby Hustle, Bellingham’s Blessed Coast Sound, & Runit! residents Arems & Rhek. Admission is only $12 before 11pm, and the full event info is here.
I’ve always admired the fact that he can rep a harder dancehall style just as easily as a roots reggae foundational style – a great example of the latter being the track I first got to know him for, “Put The Stereo On,” or his more recent single, “Longtime.”
Arguably, his biggest track is “Stinkin’ Rich” which has been heavily remixed, including a dubstep remix by TMSV which was featured on the Greensleeves Dubstep Chapter 1 compilation, and my personal favorite is the Thornato bootleg remix, which is available for free download below.
If you want to attend the show this Friday in Vancouver, email me here at email@example.com and tell me the name of one of Gappy’s two full length albums. Contest will be open until 5pm on the day of the show, at which point I will choose two winners at random, add their names to the guestlist, and email them to let them know they’ve won.
I’ll finish off with two more of my favorite tunes, the first being another example of his tougher dancehall style, the last is a foundational tune from his first album, on the original “Feel Like Jumping” / “54-46 Was My Number” riddim that I play out plenty! See you on Friday night!
